POSITION: SHELVER (PART TIME, hourly position at approximately 9 to 13 hours per week)
Immediate Supervisor: Interlibrary Loan Manager
Schedule: Tuesday 5pm to 8pm, Wednesday 5pm to 8pm, Thursday 5pm to 8pm and Saturday rotation 1pm to 5 pm (Every other Saturday) Additional hours assisting the Interlibrary Loan Department, Juvenile department and Circulation desk may be available during vacation times or when needed.
Responsibilities: To maintain the physical appearance and order of the collection by shelving and shelf reading on the main floor. Assist in the Interlibrary loan department, at the Circulation Desk on the main floor and Juvenile Department as needed.
Required: Must be 16 years old or older. Work permit required if under the age of 18.
High school diploma or GED required if over the age of 18.
An individual who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of others in the workplace will be deemed not qualified for this position.
Skill and Abilities: Physical ability to bend, stoop, reach, & lift materials up to 20 lbs. and maneuver full book carts
Ability to alphabetize and to put numbers in order according to the Dewey Decimal System.
Ability to learn automated circulation system, library policies and procedures.
Typing and computer skills are necessary.
Ability to establish good patron rapport; good communication/customer service skills.
Ability to create a friendly & pleasant impression of the library.
Flexibility to deal with multiple, unexpected tasks and patrons simultaneously.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to work with money, make change, etc.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron records.
Ability to make sound judgments/decisions.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Essential Job Functions: Sorts items on the carts for the different categories/call numbers.
Physically returns items to their proper position on the shelves
Shelf reads the collection to ensure materials are in neat and proper order.
Straightens shelves, reshelves/files misplaced items, gathers items laying in stacks to be scan and shelved.
Rearranges or shifts items as necessary.
Computer-Related Duties: May assist patrons with very basic instruction on the use of the public computers & online card catalog.
Continuing Education: May attend workshops and special interest groups to keep apprised of new technology, methods, etc.
Committee/Community Work: May participate in various library committees, the Annual Olde Canal Day’s Festival and Clinton Applefest; may participate in local community groups as a Library liaison (as necessary).
Other Duties: As assigned by Supervisor, such as taking mail to Post Office.
May assist with Interlibrary Loan Department duties as assigned by supervisor.
Empty book and audio drop.
Performs all Circulation Desk duties using computerized system during busy times/breaks, etc.
Pay: Minimum wage, hourly
Probation: 60 day probation period
